I am an independent researcher, writer and curator affiliated with the Centre for the Study of the Networked Image, London South Bank University. My PhD, the result of a collaboration between London South Bank University and Ben Uri Gallery, involved the detailed study of the twentieth century collections held by both participating institutions and resulted in a new and interdisciplinary methodological approach to the study of artists, collecting institutions and collections.
Having previously held roles including Researcher and Curator at Ben Uri Gallery, formerly ‘The London Jewish Museum of Art’, ‘The Art Museum for Everyone’ and subsequently known as Ben Uri: Art, Identity, Migration, I am passionate about European and international émigré histories and cultures. In 2018 I curated a retrospective of the work of German émigré Fred Uhlman entitled ‘The Making of an Englishman’: Fred Uhlman, a Retrospective at Burgh House, London and the Hatton Gallery, Newcastle and edited the accompanying publication. In 2019 I curated Czech Routes to Britain: Selected Czechoslovak Artists in Britain from the Ben Uri and Private Collections at Ben Uri Gallery also edited the accompanying publication and organising a series of public events and in 2021 I curated an exhibition of the early work of Gustav Metzger, a German Jewish artist and activist born to Polish parents, also editing the accompanying catalogue – funded by the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art and the Association for Art History – and organising a complementary series of events also sponsored by the Paul Mellon Centre. I was also the curator of Knots: Jonny Briggs x Burgh House: Contemporary Interventions into an Historic House, at Burgh House, 2021-2022. I am a contributor to the International Yearbook of Futurism Studies, the Journal of Avant-Garde Studies and the Journal of Modern Periodical Studies and have spoken at conferences in the UK, Belgium, Czech Republic, Portugal and New Zealand.
I am currently working on migration oriented contemporary and socially engaged art projects and as a researcher with DOR-Romanian Diaspora CIC.
